オープニングマッチは特別なもの
8月17日、プレミアリーグの2008-09シーズンが開幕しました。
スタジアムにはこの時を待ちわびていたファンの興奮が渦巻いています。
新シーズンの開幕はいつもエキサイティングです。
とりわけオープニングマッチは特別なもので、常連でないファンも押し寄せます。
私もウエストハムの開幕戦に行って来ました。
相手は降格候補にも挙げられているウィガン。
ハマーズ(ウエストハムの愛称)のファンは当然快勝を期待していましたが、今年のウエストハムについては過度の期待は禁物というべきでしょう。
試合開始早々ディーン・アシュトンの２ゴールで２−０と先制すると、サポーターたちは「俺たちはリーグ首位だ」と歌い始めました。
同日にボルトンが３−１でストークに勝利したので、開幕首位の夢は消えましたが、ごきげんのハマーズサポーターはそんなことはお構いなし。
いつまでも歌は止みませんでした。
１点を返されたものの、２−１で逃げ切り、ひとまずいいスタートを切ることができました。
ただし良かったのは結果だけで、内容には乏しい試合でした。
やはり今年もハマーズに過度の期待は禁物のようです。
すでに大衆紙にはかつてのウエストハム監督で、現在はポーツマスの監督を務めるハリー・レドナップの帰還説まで流れています。
まだ１試合が終わったばかりだというのにです。
翌日の日曜日には優勝争いの中心になるであろう２チームの試合が行なわれました。
チェルシーは４−０でポーツマスに勝利。
一方、プレミアリーグ王者マンチェスター・ユナイテッドはオールドトラフォードでニューカッスルに１−１のドローというショッキングな結果に終わりました。
レギュラー選手数人を欠くとはいえ、昨季は６−０で粉砕した相手に大苦戦。
マンチェスター・Ｕはいまさらながら補強らしい補強をしてこなかったことを疑問視されています。
そうはいっても、まだ開幕したばかり。
理論上はすべてのチームに優勝の可能性はあるのです。
これから来年の５月まで、ファンは毎週ごとに一喜一憂して過ごしていくことになります。
それが古今東西変わらないフットボールの楽しみ方なのです。
